One of the first things I was advised when I was going to Zambia, was:"Bring a good book for times of waiting". Well I just finished my first one and it gave me a lot of thoughts. "DEAD AID - Why aid is not working and how there is another way for Africa" by Zambisa Moyo, a female zambian economist is both provocing and mind-challenging. Filled with examples and facts, the book is about how aid money given to African governments without conditions, makes it harder for the African countries to be economically independent and create sustainable growth. She argues for a change in the approach to helping Africa. Through e.g more (Foreign Direct ) investments, trade, micro-finance and remittances and savings, she brings examples on how other developing countries have managed to make great progress without lots of aid. Even though you might disagre with the economically perspective that is presented, the booak is a firetorch that deserves attention and to be discussed. I warmly recommend it! I am also glad to feel that FK and the work being done by the participants is not far from the way of development D. Moyo recommends. Exchange of cultural and professional skills can not be put in the pocket of corrupt leaders. Also check out the webpage about how to contribute to development through micro-finance www.kiva.org.
